Sailing in Mallorca in September: The perfect time to enjoy the Mediterranean

When we think of sailing around Mallorca, we often picture the months of July and August: long days, plenty of sunshine, coves teeming with life and the Mediterranean in the height of the season.

But there’s something that those who know the island well are aware of: September is one of the best times to enjoy Mallorca from the sea.

You can still feel the summer in the air, the temperatures remain pleasant and the water retains the warmth of the previous months. At the same time, the island gradually begins to return to a more relaxed pace, with fewer tourists and a different atmosphere in many of its coves and harbours.

It’s another way of experiencing the Mediterranean. More unhurried, more peaceful and, perhaps for that very reason, even more special.

Why go sailing in Mallorca in September?

September has something that’s hard to find during the peak season: balance.

During the day, you can still make the most of the sea – swimming, snorkelling or spending hours sunbathing – without necessarily feeling the intense heat of some days in August. And when the afternoon arrives, the temperatures start to become more pleasant and the light takes on that warm hue that makes the coast of Mallorca look even more beautiful.

What’s more, the gradual decline in tourist numbers means that many parts of the island feel more peaceful. It doesn’t mean the sea is empty or that all the coves are deserted, but it does mean the experience can be much more relaxed.

And that changes the way you sail.

Because chartering a boat in Mallorca shouldn’t be about trying to visit as many places as possible in a single day. It’s about enjoying the time you have on board and letting the day unfold without too much of a rush.

Mallorca from the sea, without the hustle and bustle of summer

One of the great advantages of sailing in September is precisely that sense of space.

You can set off in the morning, choose a route based on the wind and sea conditions, stop for a swim and carry on sailing whenever you feel like it. You might come across a cove that tempts you to stay a little longer, or decide to change course because conditions are better elsewhere.

Sailing doesn’t have to be completely planned out before you set off.

In fact, one of the things we enjoy most about sailing around Mallorca is precisely that ability to adapt the day to whatever’s happening at sea.

The wind changes, the light changes, the coastline changes.

And the best route can be different every day.

A day at sea is also about knowing how to enjoy it

A day out on a boat doesn’t have to be packed with activities.

Sometimes it’s simply a matter of finding a quiet spot, having a swim, enjoying a drink and letting the hours slip by.

You can listen to music whilst sailing, share a meal on board, go snorkelling or simply lie back in the sun.

And precisely because we believe that enjoying the sea also means respecting it, we take care of every little detail of the experience.

The sun cream we use comes from a brand committed to protecting the marine environment. Music is part of the experience, but always with respect for those who share the Mediterranean with us. And both sailing and anchoring are carried out with the protection of Posidonia oceanica always in mind – one of the most important ecosystems in the waters of the Balearic Islands.

Because enjoying Mallorca from the sea and looking after Mallorca are not two separate things.

They are part of the same experience.

Sailing with respect for Posidonia

Posidonia is not simply a plant found underwater. It is one of the Mediterranean’s great natural treasures and plays a vital role in the conservation of its ecosystems.

That is why, when we sail around Mallorca, we pay particular attention to where and how we anchor.

Getting to know the coastline also means familiarising ourselves with its protected areas, respecting the Posidonia beds and choosing the right spots to enjoy the sea without causing any damage.

For us, this is an integral part of our approach to sailing.

We want to discover coves, crystal-clear waters and incredible spots around Mallorca, but we want to be able to continue enjoying them for many years to come.

Why can a skipper change your experience?

If you have no sailing experience or simply want to switch off whilst on holiday, hiring a boat with a skipper in Mallorca allows you to enjoy the day in a completely different way.

The skipper takes care of the sailing and adapts the route to the actual conditions on the day. This means you can focus on enjoying yourself: swimming, listening to music, sharing a meal, snorkelling or simply admiring the coastline.

But the value of a good skipper goes beyond simply knowing how to sail a boat.

Getting to know Mallorca from the sea means understanding how each area behaves depending on the wind, which spots are the most sheltered, when it’s worth continuing the sail and when it’s better to stay and enjoy a particular area.

The Mediterranean isn’t static.

And neither should a good sailing experience be.

September is the perfect time for a leisurely sail

Perhaps that’s what we like most about Mallorca in September.

You don’t have to rush.

You don’t have to try and see everything.

You can enjoy a peaceful morning sailing along the coast, stop for a swim, have lunch on board and carry on with your trip whenever you feel like it. You can wait until the afternoon to enjoy the changing light or simply stay out at sea a little longer.

Because when you have a few hours to enjoy the Mediterranean, luxury isn’t necessarily about doing more.

It’s about having time to enjoy what’s already right in front of you.

The sea.

The island.

The people you love.

And that feeling that, for a few hours, there are no other obligations.

Our approach to navigation

At Sail & Protect, we believe that a sailing experience should be special, but also environmentally conscious.

We love enjoying music, the sun, good conversation and a swim in crystal-clear waters. But we also believe that all this only makes sense when we do so whilst respecting the environment that allows us to enjoy it.

That’s why we pay attention to the small details: from choosing products that are kind to the marine environment to the way we sail and anchor, always bearing in mind the protection of the Posidonia seagrass.

Because we don’t just want to take you to discover Mallorca.

We want to show you how to enjoy it from the sea in a way that makes sense to us and to the place we’re sharing.
